For Youth and Schools
The Children and Teen Services Librarian works with kids and teens up to age 18 and learns about their specific reading needs in order to provide the best service possible for this important school age group. There is no set minimum age to start services with TBBL. Books for very young children usually contain more illustrations than text and are therefore not part of the program. Materials in the collection begin at the preschool level, and NLS provides a parent's guide circular that lists other sources of audio materials for preschool children.

The Library maintains a well-rounded book collection that includes many of the books on school reading lists, including Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts as well as a wonderful selection of books for recreational reading.

The Library does not provide textbooks. For information on where to obtain textbooks see the NLS Frequently Asked Questions (question number 24).

Kids and teens are loaned a playback machine for use with the recorded books and magazines. Books may be ordered from the catalogs that are sent to each new reader once they are registered for service. The normal loan period for books and cassettes is four weeks. If a book is needed for longer than the four-week loan period, you may renew it.

As part of its commitment to promote reading all year long, TBBL sponsors a free eight week long Summer Reading Program for kids and teens. In addition, many school-age readers in grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12 participate in the Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award program. These are also great books for year round reading!

You can also visit NLS Kids Zone for a children’s special online public catalog and some good reading recommendations.

There is a growing collection of large print books geared toward kids and teens. This collection contains many award-winning titles plus some old favorites. The Children and Teen Services Librarian will be happy to compile a bibliography of available materials upon request. The booklists can be compiled by author, subject or other criteria.

Both public and private schools with eligible students may register with the TBBL by filling out an institutional application . Individual students may also apply for home service by filling out an individual application .
