Be Creative is the slogan for the 2009 Children’s Summer Reading Program, which will be offered by public libraries throughout the state. Children participating in the summer reading program will challenge their creative potential by reading books throughout the summer and attending library programs. Programs, which include the performing arts, visual arts, literature, sports, and science, are designed to show children ages 2 to 12 how they can Be Creative! Children are the active participants in various age-appropriate activities that motivate them to read and succeed. The goal is to foster self-confidence, creativity, and imaginative thinking in Louisiana youth.
This year’s artwork was created by nationally known children’s illustrator David Catrow. David has illustrated over 30 books for children. His whimsical characters are engaged in a variety of creative activities including painting, playing musical instruments, dancing, and acting. Children who join the Summer Reading Club will receive reading logs to keep track of their reading. Each child who completes the program will receive a personalized reading achievement certificate. T-Shirts and canvas tote bags with the “Be Creative” theme will be available at most public libraries. Families are encouraged to check with their local public library to learn about the specific incentives and programs available in their community.
The 2010 Children's slogan will be "Make a Splash - READ"
