JOB TITLE: Branch Manager / Youth Services Librarian
POSITION TYPE: Full-time Librarian
LOCATION: Livingston Parish Library, South Branch
STARTING SALARY: $22.60 per hour
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director and/or Library Director

Livingston Parish Library is seeking a dynamic individual interested in working in a dual capacity, managing a team of South Branch employees and working with the youth of the parish. This position serves the needs of patrons who visit and use the South Branch, located at 23477 Hwy 444, Livingston, LA  70754.

NATURE OF WORK:

This full-time position has a dual role, branch manager and youth services librarian.

As a branch manager, this position participates in LPL's Management Team and strategic plan functions.  Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate supervisory capacity and enjoy managing a small team in a branch setting.

As a youth services librarian the individual hired will assist the Youth Services department in the development and implementation of programming for children and teens.  Applicants should enjoy engaging professionally with children and teens as well as adult caregivers.  This position will be expected to build community relationships through leading and participating in programs and classes for youth of all ages, including storytime. Applicants should possess exemplary customer service skills as well as knowledge and experience with early literacy programming.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • Oversees and can adequately perform all aspects of branch operations
  • Develops, delivers and continually evaluates and improve branch services
  • Supervises, trains, motivates, schedules and evaluates all branch employees; guides staff toward the highest standards of customer service
  • Provides patron advisory and guidance services; answers reference questions; performs on- line database searches; assists patrons with computer searches at public access terminals; assists patrons in selection of non-book materials.
  • Trains personnel in use of collections
  • Contributes to planning and development of continuing education programs and community programs
  • Prepares and presents programming to population of varied ages individually or as a part of a Team.
  • Assists Head of Youth Services in parish wide programs and initiatives
  • Attends professional meetings and in-service programs; keeps current with developments in library science.
  • Contributes to selection, development and evaluation of materials in specialized or assigned area; recommends items to be added or withdrawn from the library collections.
  • Prepares for and conducts library tours.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.    
  • Creates an environment in the children's and teen’s area, which provides for enjoyable and convenient use of library resources
  • Maintains current lists of shelf reading assignments
  • Ensures that youth area and information desks are kept clean and orderly.
  • Creates attractive and current displays and decorations for youth service area.
  • Plan and conduct branch level youth services programming for parish youth aged 0 to 17
  • Works with other youth librarians and coordinates to plan shared programming and events that may be held at multiple library locations.
  • Plans and conducts a weekly story time following set guidelines.
  • Provides outreach services to area daycares, preschools, schools, after school programs, camps and other community groups as needed.

  • Ability to plan and deliver programs, including preschool story times, book talks, school visits, and adult programs.

  • Proficiency in the use of computers for library work; including the ability to access and utilize Internet resources and office software applications.
  • Ability to supervise a small staff.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse public in identifying and satisfying individual interests.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed in a public library setting, subject to moderate noise. Must be able to walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift up to 25 pounds, stand, talk, listen, and use equipment such as a computer, telephone, digital equipment and scanner, fax machine, and photocopiers. Must be able to retrieve library materials from stacks for patrons quickly and easily. Normal vision requirements.  Some agility is needed to conduct story time using action rhymes.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • At least one year of experience working in a public library within a children’s or young adult department, with job duties and responsibilities requiring a level of independent work and thinking. Branch management/supervisory position experience is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Louisiana driver’s license.
