Director, St. John the Baptist Parish Library, LaPlace, LA
Summary: With oversight by the Board of Control, the Director serves as chief administrative and financial officer and has responsibility for administration of all library staff, outlets, services and functions. The system has 50 full and part time employees with a central library and three branches.
Required Training and Experience:
- Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.
- At least 5 years of paid, full time, professional library experience with increasing responsibility including supervisory and administrative responsibility.
- Must have certification by the Louisiana Board of Library Examiners or be able to attain certification within the first year of employment
Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Comprehensive Knowledge of :
- Professional library principles and practices
- Public library functions, facilities and operations
- Patron needs and library services to meet those needs
- Standard library automated system modules
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products

Demonstrated Ability to:
- Administer the library system operations and projects
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with library trustees and staff and Parish officials
- Represent the library to the public, communities and organizations
General Duties:
- Directs operation of the library system (staff, services, facilities) and capital planning; including planning, organizing and coordination of daily business and projects
- Acts as Secretary to the Board of Control
- Advises and makes recommendation to the Board on policies and is responsible for the implementation of policies
- Develops long-range objectives and plans; initiates implementation of Board-adopted goals
- Develops and oversees the budgets of operations and capital projects and serves as the financial officer

Exercises direct and indirect supervision of the operations of the library; responsible for and provides oversight and guidance in the following:
- Standards and levels of services and programs offered, automation, technical services, public relations and staff development.
- Decisions regarding library personnel including hiring, employment, development and discipline
- Interpretation and application of policy; resolution of inquiries and complaints
- Development of projects, policies and reports
- Maintenance and security of facilities, systems and grounds
- Leads tax election initiatives
Salary: $68,000.00 + dependent upon experience. Excellent Benefits.
St. John the Baptist Parish is located along the Mississippi River approximately 20 miles above New Orleans. The 2010 population was 45,924. LaPlace is the largest center of population. The petrochemical industry is a major employer along with the Port of South Louisiana. The largest agricultural crop is sugar cane. Water plays a major role in the life of the parish which is situated along Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lake Salvador and the river.
