SUMMARY: With oversight by the Library Resource Administrator, this individual is to provide
library materials to the public in an accurate and timely manner through cataloging and
classification of library materials in a variety of formats; to prepare, produce, distribute, and
manage written reports, manuals, memos, and statistics; and to ensure the availability of the
Library’s technology (databases, computers, networking) for staff and public. Performs related
and other work as required.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or
Information Science from an ALA-accredited library program; prefer 1 year working experience
in cataloging services; prefer some experience with public libraries and library automation
software.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Comprehensive knowledge of:
cataloging and classification principles and procedures such as AACR2, MARC, LCSH, DDC,
cataloging of print and non-print materials, and authority control issues; professional library
principles and practices; public library functions and operations; patron needs and library services
to meet those needs; standard library automation system modules; principles and practices of
supervision; networking and computer technology. Experience in: cataloging and classification;
network and computer maintenance and repair. Demonstrated ability to: catalog and classify,
using appropriate tools; operate personal computers and other office equipment; function
independently; adapt to changing conditions; work effectively and amicably with others. Must
have good vision and hearing, strong communication skills, both oral and written. Must be able
to travel to in-state and out-of-state meetings, training events, and conferences, via automobile or
airplane.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must have a good driving record with no DWI violations within
the past five years. A criminal background check, drug screening and personality assessment are
part of the pre-hire process.

GENERAL DUTIES:
• Performs professional cataloging, technical services and bibliographic control duties,
including classification and description of all acquired materials using standard library
cataloging and classification guides and by adhering to library material standards.
• Ensures database integrity and consistency through application of national standards and
internal procedures.
• Prepares, produces, distributes, and manages written reports, manuals, memos, and
statistics.
• Recommends procedural and workflow changes in department to achieve optimum
materials throughput.
• Works with the Library’s Information and Technology (IT) department to ensure the
operation of library hardware, software, peripherals, and ensure network connectivity.
• Attends meetings, training seminars and conferences as required or needed.

THE LIBRARY: The Webster Parish Library System was established in 1929 making it the
fourth oldest system in Louisiana. The headquarters and main branch are located in Minden, with
one other full-time branch in Springhill, and 5 part-time branches in Cotton Valley, Sarepta,
Sibley, Doyline and Heflin. The system has combined holdings of 91,747 items, 43 full and parttime
staff, and an annual budget which exceeds $3 million. Circulation for 2010 was more than
276,000. The automation system is Polaris. WPL is a member of the Green Gold Library
System, a cooperative library system in the northwest region of the state.

SALARY: Negotiable depending on experience; ranging from $30,000 to $35,000 per year.
