McNeese State University invites qualified applicants and nominations for the position of Head Government Information Librarian/Assistant Professor in the Department of Government Information, Frazar Memorial Library. This is a full-time, 12–month, unclassified, tenure-track position. The appointment begins in December 2011.
Position Description and Responsibilities:
The Government Information Librarian serves as Head of the Government Information Department and reports to the Library Director. The Head, Government Information Librarian provides leadership for planning, implementing, and managing all aspects of a “complete” Louisiana government publications program for the 7th Congressional District of Louisiana and the “selective” Federal Depository Library as part of the Government Printing Office.
• Coordinates and manages all public and technical services of the Government Information Department, including direct supervision of departmental personnel and policy formation.
• Provides leadership in identifying training needs and in developing training tools, such as online tutorials to facilitate the use of government resources in all formats and instructs library patrons in the use of government bibliographic tools and electronic resources as requested by faculty or students.
• Provides reference and information service as part of the public services staff.
• Acquires document materials by direct correspondence with the issuing agency, by personal contacts with government officials and librarians, by monitoring government web sites, and/or by purchase or exchange.
• Cooperates with the university administration, faculty, library staff; GPO staff; and regional depositary staff to select relevant materials to meet the needs of the citizens of the 7th Congressional District of Louisiana and a “selective” Federal Depository Library.
• Participates in the library’s liaison program; professional development activities relating to preservation, trends in libraries, librarianship in general, and government information in particular and serves on various Library and University committees.
• Provides research services regarding federal, state, and local government information to meet administrative needs of the McNeese State University and other constituent populations.
• Organizes, maintains, and develops the government information collection in all formats, including the McNeese State University Library Government Information web site, wikis, blogs, IM, and social media.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, (MLS, MILS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Three years experience in an academic library required. At least one year government information experience required. At least one year supervisory experience required.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Proven ability to manage and oversee complex projects, meet deadlines, and to prioritize work in alignment with the service goals of the library and the university.
• Familiarity with emerging trends in library and government information services.
• Experience with SirsiDynix Symphony ILS specifically WorkFlows.
• Sufficient mobility and dexterity to move around the Library and retrieve and carry materials from library shelving and cabinets, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 35 lbs), ability to work with keyboard, mouse, and monitor for extended periods of time; ability to travel to attend training workshops, meetings, and conferences.

Salary: $50,000
