Librarian III, Youth Services Coordinator
Full-Time
SUMMARY: Under administrative supervision, this is responsible professional library work, which involves the application of professional library techniques and procedures serving as the Youth Services Coordinator for the library system. Performs related and other work as required.
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Applicant must have both of the following:
1. Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college AND
2. Attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university.
Applicant must have one of the following:
1. One year of full-time, post-MLS library experience OR
2. Two years of full-time paraprofessional relevant library experience
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Applicant must have the following:
Comprehensive knowledge of:
1. professional library principles and practices;
2. public library functions, facilities, and operations;
3. patron needs and library services to meet those needs;
4. standard library automated system modules;
5. electronic and printed materials, resources and databases
Preferred: knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature, periodicals, audiovisual materials, websites and other electronic media, and other materials what contribute to a diverse, current, and relevant youth’s collection.
Demonstrated ability to:
1. handle both routine operations and long-range planning;
2. establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public;
3. supervise, train, and evaluate support staff;
4. schedule department staff and work flow for maximum effectiveness;
5. communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals;
6. be proficient on the computer with various software.
GENERAL DUTIES
1. Serves as the Youth Services Coordinator for the library system.
2. Department Management: Coordinates, directs and supervises the work of the Youth Services Department at the Main Library.
3. Personnel: Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates one part-time Library Specialist I; fully participates in the hiring process; reviews work plans on a regular basis; maintains effective working relationship with all staff and is available for the staff to discuss all issues as needed; completes payroll; processes and reconciles all leave requests; completes substitutes usage report; schedules substitutes as needed; covers for personnel shortages; recommends staffing needs and changes; conducts investigations and resolves employee inquiries and/or complaints; assists administrative supervisors with handling of these and other personnel matters; participates in corrective action meetings; makes informed decisions based on policies listed in the Employee Handbook; keeps staff informed on new policies and procedures.
4. System-wide coordination duties: Coordinates staff attendance at youth services workshops; works with local television station and Shreveport Regional Art Council for week-long Summer Reading Festival Kick-off program annually; assists with writing and planning Reading Festival play performance; helps with stage set up and various duties; coordinates staff participation at library information booth for Reading Festival weekend display; plans and coordinates Revel Library Book Walk program annually; assists in system-wide story share programs with youth staff from all branches; shares program ideas and encourages other youth staff to program effectively; responsible for planning the Summer Reading Program annually; orders materials, manuals, prizes, staff t-shirts and book bags, and requests donations; schedules guests for all branches; negotiates guest contracts.
5. Public Services: Staffs the desk in the Youth Services area as needed; presents weekly story times and develops felt board stories and practices presentations; makes school / child care facilities visits and presents story sessions as requested; reviews story time plans regularly with Youth Services Library Specialist; oversees displays at Main Youth Services Department; makes sure programs are advertised effectively; partners and maintains regular communication with local agencies, institutions and organizations serving youth in the community such as Head Start; participates in local events.
6. Collection Development: Develops the youth book collection at Main; keeps reading and listening materials collection current; weeds books in the collection as needed; replaces worn materials which still have merit.
7. Finances: Analyzes the costs of library services to youth in order to develop, justify, administer, manager and evaluate a budget; receives and reviews invoices and sends to Financial Services Associate for payment.
8. Planning: Assesses the diverse needs, preferences, and resources of the community on a regular and systematic basis; participates in all aspects of the library’s planning process to represent and support services to youth; sets long- and short-range goals, objectives, strategic plans and priorities.
9. Professional Development: Attends monthly management meetings, meetings of appointed committees, and workshops and conferences.
10. Other duties as needed.

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile. The library system has a combined holdings of over 665,000 items and an annual budget which exceeds $18,000,000. The library has a staff of 250 (169 FTE).
