DESCRIPTION:
The Floater provides direct assistance to patrons in all departments at the Central Library (Circulation, Children’s, Computer Lab, Reference, History Center). Basic duties are checking materials in and out, shelving, assisting and instructing library patrons in using library resources and finding information in the collection, assisting patrons using the Library’s public computers and assisting with basic maintenance for the Bossier Central Library’s computers and software, assisting with projects pertaining to all reading programs and other events, etc.

Sunday 2:00pm – 5:00pm (in Circulation)
Monday – Thursday 12:00pm – 8:00pm (12-5 in various departments, as needed and 5-8 in computer lab)

QUALIFICATIONS (for complete list of required qualifications, see job description):
• Demonstrated, proven ability and passion for public service and public contact
• Ability to deal with patrons/staff effectively and courteously at all times
• Intermediate word processing skills and Internet navigation skills
• Ability to operate general office equipment such as computers, photocopiers and typewriter with minimal training
• Ability to lift and move heavy objects, stoop, bend, move books and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
All offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a substance abuse test and criminal background check.
SALARY:
$10.39/hr.

JOB SUMMARY
The Floater provides direct assistance to patrons in all departments at the Central Library (Circulation, Children’s, Computer Lab, Reference, History Center). Basic duties are checking materials in and out, shelving, assisting and instructing library patrons in using library resources and finding information in the collection, assisting patrons using the Library’s public computers and assisting with basic maintenance for the Bossier Central Library’s computers and software, assisting with projects pertaining to all reading programs and other events, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

CIRCULATION:
1. Possess a working knowledge of aspects of the library’s automated system that apply to this position
2. Take responsibility for becoming familiar with upgrade changes without prompting from supervisor
3. Assume proactive role during scheduled and assigned desk duty
4. Perform closing procedures correctly
5. Perform library materials check-in, check-out, renewal and holds
6. Check applications for borrower’s cards for completeness and processes them according to established library procedures
7. Accurately adds and updates records (e.g. user information) to automated system as required
8. Collect patron fines and fees (e.g. for overdue, lost or damaged items) and makes change as needed
9. Inspect returned materials for damage and processes damages for mending
10. Politely answers telephones and provides routine information; makes referrals or takes messages as appropriate
11. Deal with patron complaints and problems patiently and decisively
12. Oversee appropriate use of library facilities and materials
13. Conduct effective reference interviews to determine patron needs or refers them to a librarian
14. Accompany patrons to shelves to locate materials when possible
15. Assist library patrons in using library resources and finding information in the collection
16. Assist library patrons in using computer resources (e.g. online catalog)
17. Answer patrons’ directional, as well as policy and procedure questions
18. Responsible for daily collection of book drop materials
19. Automatically begins interlibrary loan process when in-house resources do not meet patron needs
20. Carry out interlibrary loan procedures for incoming and outgoing library materials
21. Assure accurate library shelving of items by shelf reading and re-shelving according to the Dewey Decimal System, as assigned
22. Ensure that assigned shelf reading area always appears neat and orderly
23. Conducts daily searches for missing items or other materials requested by patrons
24. Assist in performing essential duties of absent staff members without prompting of supervisor
25. When assigned to an area away from the Circulation desk, offer to help at the desk when assigned staff appear overwhelmed
CHILDREN’S:
1. Perform closing procedures correctly
2. Assist patrons in a courteous fashion
3. Oversee appropriate use of library facilities and materials
4. Deal with patron complaints and problems patiently and decisively
5. Assist patrons in using library resources and finding information in the collection
6. Assist patrons in using computer resources (e.g. online catalog)
7. Assure accurate library shelving of items by shelf reading and re-shelving according to the Dewey Decimal System
8. Ensure that assigned shelf reading area always appears neat and orderly
9. Check for any damage to books, clean them if necessary and make sure they are at the correct branch location
10. Pull books from shelves that may require a reorder or be discarded
11. Assist with projects pertaining to all reading programs and other events
12. Set-up or take down any displays in Children Services and refer patrons to these displays
13. Promote all children’s services and events
14. Maintain and organize story time props and art supplies in storage areas; maintains list of inventory and location of items
15. Prepare materials to publicize the services and resources of the Children’s department
16. Clean work desk so other employees have a usable work area
17. Clean children’s computers to promote a germ-free environment
COMPUTER LAB:
1. Understands and enforces the Library’s policies and procedures, while safeguarding confidential and restricted information
2. Provides courteous and professional user support and customer service to users of the Library’s public access computers, including, but not limited to:
a. Assistance with reservation, logon, and printing procedures
b. Assistance with Microsoft Office and/or a similar software program
c. Assistance with file management in a Windows environment
d. Assistance with basic Internet sites and services (email, searching, etc.)
3. Monitors public use of computers
4. Accepts responsibility for the public computers and ensures that the computers are ready for use, paper is stocked, chairs are pushed in, monitors are clean, etc.
5. Performs data entry and word processing support for record-keeping projects, especially those related to the Library’s computer hardware and software
6. Performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting for Library hardware and software and reports more complicated issues either via the help desk system or to the Information Technology Specialist
REFERENCE:

12. Assist in maintaining and updating the reference collection
13. Assist with Reader’s Advisory, creation of monthly displays, instructional material, and e-Reference inquiries
HISTORY CENTER:
1. Assume proactive role during scheduled and assigned desk duty
2. Perform opening and closing procedures correctly
3. Politely answers telephones and provides routine information; makes referrals or takes messages as appropriate
4. Deal with patron complaints and problems patiently and decisively
5. Oversee appropriate use of History Center and materials
6. Conduct effective reference interviews to determine patron needs
7. Assist patrons in using History Center resources and finding information in the collection
8. Assists patrons in using computer resources (e.g. databases)
9. Answer patrons’ directional, as well as policy and procedure questions
10. Retrieve archival documents for patrons from archive collections
11. Assure accurate shelving of archival documents by re-shelving according to numbering sequences, as necessary
12. Assist in routine set up and cleanup of meeting rooms for daily meetings by scheduled patrons
13. Enter data onto computer database as requested by supervisor
14. Assist with transcribing oral history tapes and videos, if applicable
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT:
This position requires the use of a variety of office machines, computers, and Library equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High school diploma or GED
2. Previous customer service experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of library practices and principles
2. Knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification
3. Basic word processing skills and basic Internet navigation skills
4. Demonstrated, proven ability and passion for public service and public contact
5. Documented record of establishing strong, supportive, cooperative relationships and positive communications with co-workers and supervisors in a collaborative, cooperative work setting
6. Ability to deal with patrons/staff effectively and courteously at all times
