JOB TITLE: Library Assistant IV - Librarian I
SALARY CLASSIFICATION:
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services Department, Main Library

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be energetic, cheerful, highly motivated, and creative.
  • A bachelor’s degree in child development, education or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A master’s degree from an ALA accredited library and information science program with a focus in youth services preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of children’s and young adult literature including bibliographic tools and sources pertaining to youth literature and work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library programming practices for youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to book talk young adult literature.
  • Demonstrated interest in youth and in library work with youth.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop strong, interactive relationships with home school families, and families with special needs’ children.
  • Strong customer service skills, especially the ability to establish good rapport with children, teens and their families as well as maintaining effective working relationships with the general public, parish school system teachers and administrators, library staff, volunteers, and board members.
  • Knowledge and support of the principles of intellectual freedom.
  • Good verbal and written skills and able to prioritize, manage time, and orchestrate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of library databases, computer software, word processing, and online services and resources, such as HomeworkLA.com, World Book Online for Kids, Mango Languages, Tumble Books.
  • Knowledge of juvenile and young adult collection location and organization.
  • Able to maintain reliable schedule and regular attendance.
  • Flexible in adapting to changing work situations and to varied work schedule.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • The position requires continuous standing, keyboarding, talking, reaching, bending, hearing, stooping, kneeling or crawling, and the repetitive motions of hands/wrists.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful work situation.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Creates a welcome, responsive, and inviting library environment for children and their adult care givers, and teens, and keeps the children’s and young adult areas clean and orderly.
  • Provides readers advisory and reference services for children and teen users.
  • Plans and conducts programs and activities for elementary, middle, high school, and home schooled students. Provides outreach service, including book talk presentations, to Port Allen Middle and Brusly and Port Allen High Schools.
  • Promotes and administers the summer reading program registration and record keeping.
  • Assists with the development and the installation of department exhibits and displays.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Organize and give library tours and explain library services to students and groups of young library users.
  • Train young library users to search for information by following an appropriate inquiry process using books and/or electronic resources.
  • Assist with management of the youth collection, including shelf maintenance, inventory, collection assessment, and acquisition suggestions.
  • Prepare annotated lists of new young adult books and e-mail them to high school librarians and English teachers.
  • Provide direction to library staff and volunteers as they shelve and assist in the youth services department.
  • Assist in preparing library program promotional brochures and flyers as well as   program guides, public service announcements and news releases.
  • Prepare webliographies to enhance presentations and programs.
  • Assist with the development and the installation of department exhibits and displays.
  • Contribute to the department’s social media presence under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian
  • Contribute to the design and maintenance of the children’s and teen pages on the library’s website.
  • Assist in keeping the program calendar on library’s website updated with youth services programs and activities.
  • Design and assist with power point presentations to promote the library’s electronic resources and services.
  • Assist department staff with the operation of electronic equipment. etc.
  • Set up performance sites with sound system, lighting, and appropriate audience seating.
