Background

The Louisiana Voices Recording Studio records audio books for loan to citizens who are blind, visually impaired, or have other physical disabilities that prevent them from reading standard print. As part of the State Library’s Talking Books and Braille Library, Louisiana Voices also works in conjunction with the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled in the Library of Congress.

The existing collection contains over 300 Louisiana fiction and non-fiction audio books for both adults and children about or related to Louisiana. Books about Louisiana sports, politics, Hurricane Katrina, mysteries, romance, and music are particularly popular. The collection also contains many of the Louisiana Young Readers Choice Award titles for grades 3-5 so there is a nice selection of books for the younger reader, including the Clovis Crawfish series.

Although the entire existing collection is available for checkout to our citizens, new titles will not be recorded because the program has been temporarily suspended effective September 2010 due to statewide budget cuts.
